A typical single-arch rubber expansion joint usually comprises the following components:

1. Rubber Body: This is the heart of the expansion joint, constructed from synthetic rubber (like EPDM, NBR, Neoprene, or IIR – the choice depends on the fluid and temperature) reinforced with multiple layers of fabric (such as nylon, polyester, or fiberglass). This construction provides both strength and flexibility. The rubber body is typically molded into a curved, wavy shape (the arch) to allow for movement.

2. Metal Flanges: These are usually made from carbon steel, stainless steel, or similar materials, connected to one or both ends of the rubber body. They feature bolt holes to attach to the flanges of pipes or equipment.

3. Control Rods/Limit Bolts (Optional): Some designs include multiple control rods that pass through the flanges and are secured to the exterior of the expansion joint. These rods (do not) bear weight in normal operation. Instead, they are designed to limit (excessive) displacement of the expansion joint during (specific) movement-requiring events.

4. Reinforcing Rings/Wire Reinforcement (Optional, Internal): Some designs incorporate internal reinforcing rings or fabric reinforcement within the rubber body to increase its pressure resistance and vacuum tolerance.
